  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. D. LeDu -- I loved this book : If you have even the slightest interest in pioneer days, this is a "must read" book. I have lived and worked as a surveyor in many of the places he describes. With my memories as a background, this book took me back 150 years. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2012 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gary Upshaw -- A True Patriotic Adventure : Ezra Meeker (1830 - 1928) was a remarkable tough pioneer who was among the early wave of settlers to the Oregon area of America below British Columbia in Canada. He followed the Oregon trail with a team of oxes pulling a small sturdy wooden wagon. He lived to emortalize the trail, and did so by travelling it by ox cart in his 70's. He wrote in one of his books "To keep the flame of partriotism alive, we must keep the memory of the past vividly before us." - a truism that is being ignored and vilified by educators, politicians, and nihilists today. Not too many people today could live up to the rigors that Meeker endured. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Gina Boscarino -- A treat for History Buffs : and touching interactions that I will not forget. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from bcook -- Adventurous Pioneers : What an excellent account of a man and his family making the trip across the young United States and the territories to the west. Anyone who has traveled by car or train through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington State will recognize many of the places Ezra Meeker writes about, but long before they became bustling cities. When I have seen historic stone markers in memory and honor of the Oregon Trail and those who traveled in so many places in the west, I had no idea who had initiated there placement. Read this outstanding book to find out. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Christopher Taylor -- Memoirs of a pioneer : The personal narrative of a man who crossed the Oregon Trail early in its history and then, later, in his 1970s returned with an ox cart to promote its history. He led his family across the trail in 1852 before the railroad, before the telegraph, when it was wide open wilderness without roads or law. The hardships and wonders of the crossing are stated with simple clarity and honesty, and the difficulties of settling in what is now Washington State are as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from sozo -- Traveling on the Trail Again : Mr. Meeker writes a detailed story of the pioneers who risked so much and left their world behind to begin again in an unknown land. He clarifies much of the myths concerning the Oregon Trail and shows the pain and hardship. Many did not make it due to illness, native indians and weather. As he reaches his goal to homestead in the Northwest, he succeeds and fails in various ventures and eventually becomes wealthy due to his hops business. As he grows older, he realizes the value of marking the trail to honor those pioneers and to document the hardships and victories along the way. His endeavor to mark the trail is rewarded as he travels the route meeting famous people and left a legacy along the way for all of us to enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2015 )
